If they ask, “Why leave if you still love me?”, you do not have to explain every feeling at once. This page is for putting an intended breakup into words: what is difficult, what you have decided, and what happens next.
If you are still deciding, start there
You do not need to frame leaving as a sacrifice “for their own good.” Describe the relationship you cannot continue as your own decision. If you remain unsure, begin with the guide to deciding while love remains.

Separate your reason, your decision and future contact
- Reason: name one or two actual difficulties that matter to your ability to continue.
- Decision: distinguish ending the relationship from asking to discuss a change.
- Contact: separate necessary tasks, such as returning belongings, from conversations about your feelings.
You do not need to diagnose their personality or deny that good times happened. A longer explanation cannot guarantee agreement.

Example words you can adapt
These are invented examples, not messages from customers or counselling clients. Use only reasons that are true for you.
“I still care about you. But we want to live in different places, and I cannot continue by giving up the life I want. I want to end our relationship.”
“I value the time we shared. But the same problems with our contact arrangements have continued after we discussed them. I have decided to end the relationship. I would like to arrange returning our belongings by message later.”
Whether to say “I still love you” is your choice. If you say it, make your present decision clear so it does not become a promise to reunite.
Avoid promises you do not intend to keep
“I am doing this for you” speaks for the other person. “Maybe one day” may leave an expectation you cannot honestly offer. “I do not want to leave, but I am leaving” can leave them unsure whether this is a decision or an invitation to negotiate.
If you are pressed to reconsider, you can repeat your decision briefly: “I understand this hurts. My decision to end the relationship has not changed.” If you are worried about their reaction, read how to prepare before communicating a breakup.

Prepare the practical boundary after the conversation
If you share a home or belongings, decide how to handle necessary contact. You can also say that you do not want to continue discussing feelings right now. No wording can remove all sadness from the other person’s experience.
If the message grows long, write a private draft before deciding what to send. The breakup letter guide and examples can help you work on its structure. A letter can remain unsent.

You do not owe the relationship a beautiful ending
Leaving does not have to become the highest form of love or a beautiful sacrifice. You can keep a flower or letter, put memories away, or keep nothing. doraifurawa’s work with flowers and memory does not choose for you.
